ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY OF ADDITION

The associative law for additon and for multiplication states the the order or pairing of numbers or quanitities can be changed without effecting the outcome. For example, if you have the numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7, then they may be added in a variety of different orders or combinations and the sum will still equal 22.

4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 22

7 + 5 + 6 + 4 = 22

5 + 4 + 6 + 7 = 22

6 + 5 + 4 + 7 = 22

In addition the associative law is often stated using variables to represent numbers (a + b) + c = a + (b + c).
