Surface area is the total area of the 2-dimensional surfaces that make up a 3-dimensional object. An example of this would be to find the surface area of a box which is a three dimensional object. The surface area of a box is found by finding the area for each of the box's sides which are two dimensional and then adding up the surface area of the sides. This would you give you the total surface area for the box.
