A variable is a placeholder in algebraic expressions; for example, in 3x = 21, x is a variable. There can be more than one variable in an algebraic expression; for example, 4x + 2y = 28, both x and y are variables. A variable is a symbol used to represent a value. The letters x, y and other letters represent values.
